The Office of the Medical Examiner (OME) was established in 1972 as a division of the Utah Department of Health. The OME is currently based on the east bench of Salt Lake City adjacent to the University of Utah School of Medicine and Primary Children’s Medical Center. The central office staff is comprised of forensic pathologists, investigative staff, autopsy technicians and office support staff.

Our current facility was completed in 1991.  A new facility is currently under construction adjacent to the Utah Public Health Laboratory in Taylorsville, Utah, and will house the Office of the Medical Examiner, the State Crime Laboratory and a section of the Department of Agriculture. Construction is estimated to be completed in early 2017.
